Some trips are planned months in advance.
This wasn't one of them.
I had taken leave from work with only one goal in mindβsee snowfall. My original plan was Mussoorie because it was easier to reach and almost everyone recommended it.
While searching for hotel reviews the night before booking, I came across a photograph of Auli.
Snow-covered slopes.
Wooden cottages.
Cable cars floating above pine forests.
Within ten minutes, I had completely changed my plan.
Looking back, I'm glad I did.
The Journey Was Longer Than I Expected
Getting to Auli isn't as straightforward as reaching other hill stations.
The trip involved trains, mountain roads, and plenty of sharp turns.
Normally, that would have been frustrating.
But somewhere after Joshimath, the scenery completely changed.
Every bend revealed snow-covered peaks that looked unreal.
Nobody in the vehicle was sleeping anymore.
Everyone was looking out of the window.
My First Morning in Auli
The alarm rang at 6 AM.
I opened the curtains expecting another cold mountain morning.
Instead, tiny snowflakes were falling outside.
Not heavy snowfall.
Just enough to quietly cover rooftops, trees, and pathways.
For almost twenty minutes I simply stood there watching.
No music.
No phone.
No photographs.
Just silence.
It's still one of the calmest mornings I've ever experienced.
The Ropeway Everyone Talks About
Before arriving, I thought the ropeway would just be transportation.
I couldn't have been more wrong.
The slow ride above forests with Himalayan peaks in the distance became one of the highlights of the trip.
Sometimes the journey itself becomes the attraction.
This was one of those moments.
I Didn't Know Skiing Was This Difficult
Watching people ski looks incredibly easy.
Trying it yourself is a completely different story.
Within the first fifteen minutes I had already fallen more times than I could count.
Luckily, the instructors were patient and encouraging.
By the end of the session, I could finally balance for a short distance.
It wasn't impressive.
But it felt like a small victory.
Evenings Felt Different Here
Unlike many tourist towns, evenings in Auli were surprisingly peaceful.
There were no crowded shopping streets.
No loud traffic.
After dinner, most travelers simply sat around bonfires sharing stories while sipping hot tea.
The cold weather somehow made conversations feel warmer.
What Surprised Me Most
I expected Auli to be all about snow.
Instead, what stayed with me were the little moments.
A local shop owner refusing to charge extra for a cup of tea because "guests should feel at home."
Children making snowmen outside their houses.
Dogs happily running through fresh snow.
The mountains were beautiful.
The people made the place memorable.
Is Auli Expensive?
Not necessarily.
Here's roughly what I spent.
Accommodation: βΉ2,200 per night
Food: βΉ900 per day
Local Travel: βΉ600
Ropeway Ticket: Around βΉ1,000
Skiing Session: βΉ1,500
Overall, the trip cost less than I had expected for a winter destination.
Things I'd Tell Every First-Time Visitor
Carry waterproof shoes.
Bring gloves even if the weather forecast looks clear.
Start your day early because mountain weather changes quickly.
Don't plan every minute.
Leave time to simply sit and enjoy the view.
Those unplanned moments often become the best memories.
Would I Visit Again?
Absolutely.
Not because of skiing.
Not because of snowfall.
But because Auli reminded me that travel doesn't always have to be fast.
Sometimes the best holiday is the one where you stop chasing attractions and start appreciating where you already are.
When I left Auli, I carried home more than photographs.
I carried home a feeling I hadn't experienced in a long time.
Peace.
